25 years ago today Nintendo released something that would change gaming. When I first laid eyes on the NES I was in love. We were visiting an old woman's house and she had the NES hooked up to her small TV. I pushed the power button and started up a game I had never heard of.
Super Mario Brothers was a revelation in magic and imagination. When Mario entered the pipe and the darkness of world 1-2 came to bear I was forever hooked. I play games to this day but I can vividly remember how amazing the original Super Mario Brother was to play for the first time. Over the next decade I was introduced to other classics, the most prominent being The Legend of Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda was such a important game because it brought a few things to the table that were revolutionary. The Legend of Zelda brought the ability to save a game to a console. This was awesome because you could save your progress and immediately start back where you left off. Previously in games you had to clunkily enter a code to return to your previous spot and it all worked fine if you didn't write it down wrong. Zelda also introduced me to the idea of an open game world. I played Zelda through many times, often bypassing early level dungeons until later OR not even starting the dungeons until I had everything you could naturally get without starting them.
The Nintendo had many more great games, but these stand out to me from the rest. Super Mario Brothers 2 and 3 were phenomenal as well. Today I raise my tea mug in celebration of an amazing system! A system that I still and will always own.
